I thought everyone would truely enjoy these words written by Rick Mercer. http://www.theindependent.ca/article.asp?AID=1333&ATID=6 Hope to write again soon... computer time is hard to come by these days. The bosses are all working on our quaterly reviews and in desperate need of all available computers. But I'll sneak on when I can to keep you all posted. Two nights ago I was the lucky recipient of a "Spa Package" that was won by my buddy Charlie Chamberlain. Charlie wasn't really interested in the package which included an one hour massage and bath in the sickbay soaker tub... I'm lucky to have been the one he thought to give it to! I managed to bring in my MP3 player and a small set of speakers, some shampoo to make bubbles, and a mint chocolate (courtesy of my brother, Mike). So I enjoyed a bubble bath with dim lighting while Enya serenaded me. Something really cool about taking a bath on a war ship in the middle of the ocean. The bath water moved with the gentle rocking of the ship. I'm not sure if we are in the northern or the southern hemisphere though - I could tell which way the water went down the drain. Will try to write again soon!

Re Rick Mercer's piece, I hate to see creative minds wasting ink on ignorance and stupidity.
Tackle this, Rick:-

whoops --
by "ignorance and stupidity" I mean Ms. Golfman's point of view.
The hyperlink I tried to insert I was hoping would go to the CBC story about the Navy running out of money and tying up its ships.
There doesn't appear to be a lot of discussion in the media about this ...
I'm astonished.

About a year ago, Vicki Robertson, writing for the CBC's Viewpoint, wrote "Making a difference" (February 28, 2006).
She writes "... I grew up in married quarters, where every neighbourhood kid understood what NATO exercises meant -- dad was going away in January and we would see him in May. The ships would quietly slip out of port for their months-long voyages, and sail back to private celebrations. Today, we see headlines when a few ships leave for a three-week exercise off the East Coast.
Even though there was little media attention, many of us wanted to sign up as soon as we were of age. It was a way of life--the only one we knew. Military service was respected. The camaraderie on the ships extended to the playground. We were a community. We supported each other. We pitched in wherever we were needed -- babysitting, mowing lawns, shovelling driveways. And we learned by example.
I remember a drive over a bridge that spans Halifax harbour with my dad. I was about 10 years old at the time, and I was just grasping the concept of the Cold War. I asked him what would happen if real hostilities broke out. "Would you have to go?" I asked tentatively.
"Yes, I would have to go."
"But what if something happened to you?"
Dad struggled with the words, but he knew he couldn't dodge the question. "Something could happen, but I signed up to protect our country."
"Couldn't you just get out of the Navy instead?"
"No."
I was hurt. Then he added: "Imagine if everyone did that. We wouldn't have much of a military."
I got it. He couldn't be selfish and neither could I. There was an awkward silence in the car as I peered out over the dockyard brimming with warships. But at that moment, I realized that it takes a special person to be in the military -- selfless, dedicated and strong."
She goes on to say that while growing up, the "Navy brats" had something "other kids didn't -- independence and strength, along with enormous pride in our parents who served. They were our heroes. They still are today."
She then talks about how things have changed. "...Except for Afghanistan. The story of Manatullah, the little boy with terminal cancer, exemplifes the military that I remember...in one little boy's very short life, these men and women are doing what they promised -- making a difference and being somone's hero."
Hold that tiger, kiddo.
Happy Birthday.

Well now!! It is your shipmates turn to talk!! You are somewhere in the air between Hong Kong and Vancouver, and if I know you right, you are just about dancing in your seat with excitement about going home to your love ones. You should be!! As this has been a very trying trip. I know you readers would not understand that, as you so graceful always displayed the high points. Being here with you I know you shared the feeling that we all shared, of anger, disappointment and down right despair mixed with a lot of laughter, excitement, and admiration for each other.
You have joined an elite club that most Canadians do not have the “Right Stuff” to join. Very few would put themselves through what we do. You wrote about your nice new shine metal, I am glad that you are proud of it. Although there are many like it in Victoria, there are very few in Canada, and you EARNED one!! I will point out that my wife, Suelle has earned 4 of them, keeping the home fires burning for the last 17 years I just happen to wear them on my uniform. I hope your medal(s) stay shine for many years and does not lose its luster in your eyes. I will guarantee you that as the following month and years past the bad points of this trip will slip away and you will tell stores of all the good times. My parents have thoroughly enjoyed reading about the adventures of our trip through your eye, as after so many years my view is somewhat less enthusiastic.
As I have been struggling with PERs(Personnel Evaluation Reports) I started to think of words that would describe the people I’m writing on. Don’t worry I’m not writing yours! But I started to think about words that fit you. The words that come to mind are Sweet, Wholesome, Engaging, Charming, Innocent, Honest, True, Pleasant. But these are not Military words, so I would never say them. You will have to settle for Integral, Strong, Thorough, Of high morals, Reliable, Dependable, Organized, and Distinguished. I’m sorry I will not have the opportunity of instructing you at the school as my posting is cancelled pending my retirement this summer.
So as you leave the ship and head out to the new challenges of doing you tech course, I wish you the best. Do not look back and feel bad about not finishing the entire trip, I’m glad you will not be suffering your way home as we journey north towards the Barring Sea. May you never find yourself being tossed about in the lurch, and as my Old sea captain Dad always says, “may you always have a steady winds and following sea”
Best Wishes
Stoker Stew
