A "There & Back Again" Tale of Corrina's sailing adventures with HMCS OTTAWA while deployed in the Arabian/Persian Gulf.

Chief of Defence Staff & Rick Mercer

We have welcomed a number of distinguished guests to OTTAWA this evening, including Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff and Rick Mercer and Mary Walsh from This Hour Has 22 Minutes. The Captain announced this morning, over the sounds of showers and teeth brushing, that we would be treated to the comedy stylings of Canada’s much loved comedians and General Hillier, Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff, as well as a number of media personnel. They will be staying with us, laughing with us, and eating with us until tomorrow afternoon. The Junior Ranks (that’s me) are lucky enough to be hosting Rick Mercer in our Mess tonight… hopefully he’ll be able to make us all laugh – cause we sure could use it! Over dinner the Captain, declared our route home. We have been waiting since we slipped the lines in Esquimalt back in September to find out our route of return… But when the Captain spoke those ominous words, the silence was almost deafening. We will be returning the way we came, in that we will be taking the Pacific Route home. However, we will not be going to the same ports. Instead we will be stopping in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Dutch Harbor, and then Victoria. The moment the Captain said we were going up to Japan, I knew something wasn’t quite right. “Dutch Harbor” rang some bells, but I couldn’t quite recall where I had heard that name before… until someone piped up with the missing piece of that turbulent puzzle, “You know, where they film that TV show, ‘World’s Deadliest Catch.’” If you haven’t heard of this show, it is a reality program giving viewers “an inside look at the forty-foot waves, freezing temperatures and 700 pound king crab pots of one of the world's deadliest jobs.” I don’t think I have to elaborate much more as to the extent of my terror. I am trying hard not to let the impending doom of the Bering Sea dampen my spirits towards the ports to come – but COME ON!! The only positives that I have managed to muster are A) At least I will be able to claim I’ve sailed it all, with sea states as dangerous as this, B) I will now know what it is like to be on IV, and C) This will be one hell of a weight loss program, just in time for my homecoming. The only comfort has been double edged. I am not alone in my fears, as many of my bosses are getting rather nervous about this “change of plans” too… the only trouble is, if we are all sick, who will take care of us?? Time for the healing powers of comedy…

So, instead of Aussie land it is The Bering Sea. Oh kid, I can see your face ... all green and sweaty!
Sure hope Mr. Mercer is up for the challenge ... as I don't know how to make you laugh about this one! But I will, I will, just give me a moment.
Well, the good news is, you are now talking about coming home! And, who knows, maybe global warming will help you out?

Okay, that is then, this is now. Now you have a funny, funny Canadian on board ... enjoy his humour, enjoy being with a wonderful group of Canadian men & women and celebrate together.

I love you...waiting for the radio program... more after that....

Your biggest fan,
love Mom xoxoxo

Corrina, you are a gifted and natural "closer". It was well worth the wait. If anyone is looking here... she comes on at just before 8:00 ... she closes the show and then the choir sings.

We have it recorded, but the connection went out a couple of times, so now waiting for the Toronto feed to get to 7:55 (01:55 for us) And if that doesn't work... on to Winnipeg feed. We are in for the duration.

And I called Oma... she is sitting close to the radio and almost didn't answer the phone. She is so excited for you Corrina!

Love you and now, back to the program....

Success!
And I checked with Oma ... she is so, so proud of you. Her friends Sandy & Doris have recorded it for her too. And Uncle Fred phoned her, he was listening too and wanted to be sure she had it on!

Corrina ... remember this line ...
" I would like to thank my director and the Academy but mostly my biggest fan, Mom!"

Aye, a Mom can dream, can't she?

Hi Corrina;
Just before 2000 hrs AST tonight Your voice came out over the CBC airwaves here in the Maritimes. You are truely a great ambassador. We look forward to every entry you make on your blog. Please keep up the good work.
Now don't you worry about the trip home. You will love the beautiful scenary around Dutch Harbour. Don't believe everything you see on the Discovery Channel. People that watch that are looking for excitement so they only show the worst conditions. If the weather was that bad all the time they would get very little fishing done. Also, they fish much futher north then Dutch Harbour near Saint Paul's Island. The Jet Stream climbs to the higher latitudes in the Eastern Pacific and the weather is always warmer to the south of the Jet stream. Ask anyone who has worked the Grand Banks of NFLD or the North Sea and they will tell you that the Crab Fishermen are pussy cats. So take it from an old salt, you will have a good trip home. A very Merry Christmas to you and smooth sailing in 2007. Your East Coast fans.

Corrina,

One more time ... wishing you the merriest Christmas one can have on a warship in the Persian Gulf!.
I know you will make it a special time for not only yourself but those around you that you care about. This is one of the many things that makes you so special and loved.

Time for me to put our little turkey in our little oven ... how little? So little there is no where on the internet I can find to explain how long it takes to cook the tiny thing. Perhaps I should look under game hens?

Miss you ... sing your heart out tonight under the stars!

In our hearts....

Mom, Kees & Iris!

Glad you enjoyed the Christmas in a Box ... thought in a pinch, the cake could be used as a weapon.

This is my first visit -- I get so emotional at this time of year despite my best efforts that I couldn't look. Sorry Annette. Sorry Mom. I'll do better next time. I found myself telling Ann that this is, after all, the season of light. "Will somebody flick the damn switch" she replied. I'll send her a link to the blog. Ba da bing, ba da boom.

As you know, I am a devoted fan of the CBC and the National. Watched the return of the HMCS Iroquois and that just about finished me off.

Peter Mansbridge interviewed many families of the men and women serving in Afghanistan and I have to say that I am so glad that he did that. Sorry, kids, but I think that as hard as it is on all of you, it's frightfully difficult for the people that love you sitting at home with the wondering front and center every blessed day, first thing in the morning, last thing at night and I, for one, am glad Mr. Mansbridge AND the families are talking about that. Get it out there, I say, the sheer force of the weight and worry diffuses and peters out -- somewhat the same as Hurricanes work -- when THEY finally hit land.

And I just have to say that I think your description of K as "your boyfriend in Victoria" is absolutely perfect. He may be your rock, little girl, but I know the rockette launcher ...

Bless the masters of that ship,
The misstresses also
And all the little children
that round their tables go,
The horses in their stables
The dogs by their front doors
And all that dwell within their gates,
I wish them ten times more.

Again a very Merry Christmas to you and your crew. Ours was wonderful other than the absence of you and Kevin, but you were in our hearts and our thoughts, your stockings were hung and your Dad made a toast to you, Kevin and Nic. May you all be blessed with good wishes and we look forward to seeing you in the spring. Continue to enjoy your adventure.
We are so proud of you, keep smiling. Luv you lots
